During the Depression of the 1930s the federal government created work programs through the WPA (Works Progress Administration) to provide people with jobs. The Federal Writers Project was one such program. People went out into their communities to collect folklore, record interviews and write about the culture of the area.

Files on Greeks in Central Florida; Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants in Ybor City; and the architecture and history of St. Augustine have been deposited in the UCF archives. The Library also has an audiocassette copy of the WPA recordings of Eatonville folklorist and writer Zora Neale Hurston.
