housed at the UCF archives are documents, slides, and audiocassettes
on public events and educational programs concerning Central
Florida folklife. These include the annual Zora Neale Hurston
festival in Eatonville;
the Tarpon Springs Folk Arts Festival including audiocassettes
of interviews with residents on the folklife of the sponge-diving
industry; the Callahan Folk Arts Program, including an audiocassette
recording of 2003 Florida Folk Heritage Award winner Troy
Demps demonstrating the traditional art of African-American
hymn lining and Traditional Arts Component in Hillsborough
County Schools Project (1981) including the project report
and a school publication on community foodways.
The
annual Zora Neale Hurston festival celebrates the life and
work of Eatonville folklorist and writer Zora Neale Hurston
and features Black art and literature. At the archives, you
may read newspaper articles about the Hurston festival and
view slides of the work of African-American artists including
quilt and hat-makers.
