Talking to Family and Neighbors About Food
I. Before the Interview:
A. Think of questions to ask about food and bring that question sheet with you.
B. Find a family member or neighbor to talk to about food.
C. Sit down for a talk using your tape recorder and ask for permission to record the conversation.
II. During the Interview
A. Push the "Record" button on your tape recorder and clearly state your name, the name of the person you're talking with, and the date.
B. Ask an opening question, one that will get the person talking, like: "So what did they eat at home when you were growing up?"
C. Ask questions about food tastes and experiences.
Some tips:
- Ask about specifics: i.e. "how did this happen?", "can you tell me about a time when this happened?", or "what was it like to be there when it happened?"
- Be interested in what the other person is saying and encourage them to give you as much detail as possible about the subject.
- Ask questions that get people to talk and talk and talk! Ask for stories about food, not just information about food.
- Show pictures or ask them to show you pictures of events involving food. Ask the person to tell you about that event: "What happened?"
D. Ending the Interview:
- Have the interviewee sign a release form.
- Say "Thank you!"
III. After the Interview:
A. Push in the tabs on the corner of the tape so your talk cannot be erased.
B. Label the tape with name, date, and subject. |
